Testing 4 DNA

Sibling DNA Test

A DNA Sibling test is a test that can determine if there is any chance that two people are siblings. These types of DNA tests are usually used when one parent is not around to be tested, this is usually the father. These types of tests are most often used to verify persons that have been switched at birth or adopted children. The findings of these tests can be used for paternity purposes or legal purposes such as inheritance or immigration.

There are two types of tests currently available. The first one is a full Sibling test. In this type of test, the siblings are already verified to share one parent, most often it is the mother. They are tested to see if they do in fact share the other parent, usually the father. The other type of test is a half Sibling test. This type of test is performed when two people share different mothers but believe that they may share the same father. Both types of these tests can be taken at home and ordered online or they may be performed with a Chain of Custody, which will make them legally admissible in court. Online ordered at home tests cannot be used for legal purposes.

These at-home tests are for your own peace of mind. When taking the test, all known parties are tested including the siblings and any available parent. Known parents DNA can be helpful since this can exclude the known parents DNA making it easier to identify the other parents DNA. It may be harder to determine than a regular paternity test in that sibling may receive different amounts of DNA from their fathers.

This is why the results are known as Likelihood of Sibling. The tests generally must be above 90% for it to be considered a positive match for a sibling. The test requires that a swab of the inner check is taken from each participant of the test to get DNA cells. This is done with a noninvasive buccal swab. It is painless for all involved and only takes a few moments. The results of these tests can take from 5 to 20 days depending on the service that you use. However, most results are usually given in about 14 days. Prices for these types of DNA tests can be from $500 to $1000. Each additional sibling may cost $100 or more. Parents tested generally do not cost extra. At home tests that cannot be used in court can cost you around $400.

DNA testing has been used for many years to determine the probability of parents. It can be used for peace of mind or it can have legal ramifications such as for an inheritance or for child custody battles or child support. This is where the courts must depend on a chain of custody ordered DNA test. Sibling tests can put to rest any doubts that either party may have about a child's paternity and finally determine if two or more persons are siblings or not.
